Investing in Future Health Professionals
Jenny DiStefano couldn’t quite believe her eyes when she first read
about St. Anthony’s Health Professions Scholarship program on the bulletin
board at her nursing school. “There were no strings attached,” she
smiles. “For most of the scholarships I read about, you’d have to commit a certain number of years to the organization
after you graduate. But not St. Anthony’s: They offer a generous
scholarship, without the commitment. That made it very appealing to me.”
- 62 scholarships presented over the first two years
- $373,000 in grants made to date
- Winners receive awards ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, renewable annually
DiStefano is one of the 11 new Health Professions Scholarship winners named in 2007. The innovative program makes tuition money available to any students living in St. Anthony’s service area who are pursuing degrees in critical health care fields. DiStefano, a 2004 graduate of Ursuline Academy, lives in Crestwood, with her mother.
A companion program – the Sons and Daughters of Employees Scholarship – awarded 22 new grants in 2007 to children of St. Anthony’s employees who are academically qualified, to help them pursue undergraduate degrees in any field of study at colleges and universities in the region. Together, the two programs comprise the St. Anthony’s Norbert Siegfried Scholarship Program, named for the long-time chairman of the medical center’s Board of Directors.
“ For me, the program is wonderful,” DiStefano says. “ It’s made such a difference in my life, because I am interested in going into the Peace Corps after graduating. I was just thrilled to receive the award – and my Mom was, too. Four years of college can definitely take a toll on your bank account!”
