General Cancer Detection Guidelines

These guidelines are recommended for people at average risk for cancer and without any specific symptoms:

  • Breast self-exams starting in the 20s
  • Baseline mammogram at 35
  • Annual mammograms starting at age 40
  • Annual clinical breast exams by physician

  • Annual fecal blood test starting at age 50
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
  • Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years
  • Colonoscopy every 10 years

  • Annual screenings after becoming sexually active
  • Pap test beginning at age 30 every 2-3 years

  • Annual PSA blood test after age 50
  • Annual digital rectal exam

  • Medical history
  • Environment
  • Smoking
  • Overexposure

Any abnormal health concerns — unusual bleeding, lump, soreness, fatigue, shortness of breath — should be evaluated promptly by a physician.
