Prepared to Save Lives: Advanced Emergency Heart Care

When every minute counts, EMS crews are ready. Equipped with portable defibrillators and cardiac monitors, emergency responders often can diagnose and begin treatment for a heart attack soon after arrival.

CPR GUIDELINES
The American Heart Association says use:
30 chest compressions to every two rescue breaths for all adults, children and infants (except newborns).
The primary reason for doing CPR is to force blood through the body as much as possible so that patients avoid permanent damage to their heart muscle or brain after a heart attack.
St. Anthony’s recently donated portable defibrillators to several regional EMS districts. The new units allow EMS crews to add external pacemakers and advanced cardiac monitoring, as well as the ability to transmit all of the information directly to a hospital prior to a patient arriving in the Emergency Department.
Transmitting 12 different views of heart activity, emergency room physicians are alerted when heart damage is actually occurring so that a cardiac team is ready and waiting when the patient arrives. That means more lives are saved!
