Neuroscience Services

Rehabilitation Services

Physical therapist works with patientSt. Anthony's Neuroscience Services work in tandem with the rehabilitation department to begin therapy as soon as it is safe for patients. The rehabilitation department in acute care begins the process of recovery by assessing the patient's functional capabilities from transfers, activities of daily living and ambulation to speech language and swallowing. This early treatment intervention helps to maximize recovery for the patient, to address the patient's and family's discharge goals, and to determine appropriate settings for continued rehabilitation. Our professionals work with patients on goals for recovery to maximum functional gain throughout the continuum of care.

Acute Rehabilitation Unit

CARF: Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities LogoSt. Anthony's 49-bed CARF-Accredited Acute Rehabilitation Unit is designed to help neuroscience patients recover from severe injury, surgery, stroke or other conditions. For many, this is an appealing alternative to short-term nursing home placement.

The ARU uses a comprehensive, interdisciplinary team approach to patient care. Family members also are part of the team and receive training in appropriate techniques to assist in caring for the patient at home.

Other Rehabilitation Services - Post discharge

Following discharge from the hospital, health care and rehabilitation services are available in patient's homes through St. Anthony's Home Care Services. For information about this award-winning service, call 314-525-7300.

St. Anthony's Sports & Therapy Services continues this comprehensive, interdisciplinary team approach to patient care, providing three convenient outpatient locations: Lamplighter, across the street from the hospital, as well as in the Urgent Care Center facilities at Arnold and Fenton. Specialized neuroscience programs offered include stroke, vestibular, balance, hand therapy and incontinence rehabilitation.

Our Therapy Team

Therapy team members include (as appropriate) a physical, occupational and speech therapist. Family members also are part of the team and receive education and training to help their loved one maximize recovery.

Therapy team members play the following roles:

  • A physical therapist evaluates the patient. The physical therapist will focus on the patient's trunk, lower extremity function and ambulatory abilities.
  • An occupational therapist evaluates and works with the patient, focusing on upper extremity function and the patient's daily functions in the home.
  • A speech therapist evaluates and treats the patient’s ability to speak and cognitive function. This may include short-term and long-term memory loss, recognitive and expressive language, as well as diagnosis and treatment of swallowing disorders.

The overall goal of outpatient therapy is to fully maximize the patient recovery in all areas of function.
