The risk of developing breast cancer is different for each woman, depending on lifestyle and personal traits known as risk factors.

The following risk factors are strongly related to the disease:
- Advanced age - the older a woman is the greater her risk
- Family history - mother, sister(s) or daughter(s) who have had breast cancer
- Never having given birth
- Having a first child after age 30
- Early first menstrual period
- History of benign breast disease that required biopsies
- Certain other pre-existing breast conditions
Recommendations:
AGE 20-39:
Women have a clinical breast exam at least once a year and perform a breast self-exam once a month.
AGE 35-40:
Women have their first annual baseline mammogram.
AGE 40+:
Women have an annual mammogram, annual clinical breast exam and perform a breast self-exam once a month.
