Christina Manno-Frissel receives confirmation that she is expecting twins.
“It’s twins!”
Herculaneum resident Christina Manno-Frissell was delighted after she got confirmation from a St. Anthony’s board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist that she is expecting two babies. “It’s amazing and exciting all at the same time,” said Frissell after viewing her ultrasound. “No one in my family has twins, so this is a definite surprise.”
Frissell is one of more than 1,000 women seen each month at St. Anthony’s Perinatal Center. The center gets referrals for antenatal monitoring and consultation for women who are high risk because of multiple births, a fetal abnormality, or if the mother has a pre-existing medical condition that may complicate a pregnancy, such as diabetes, hypertension or asthma.
In 2004, almost 34 out of every 1,000 births in the United states were multiple births — an all- time high.
Traditional and advanced four-dimensional ultrasound, which shows 3-D images with real-time movement, are available as well as biophysical profiles, amniocentesis and other maternal-fetal testing. Boardcertified genetic counselors and certified diabetes educators also are on staff.
Now, Frissell says she needs to plan for double the joy — and sooner than she thought. Most multiple pregnancies deliver a month earlier than expected.
“Now I really need to get going!”
