High-Risk Mom Gives Birth to Twin Boys on Valentine’s Day
Steve and April Schrader are seeing double these days. After trying to get pregnant for more than three years, April Schrader recalls the surprise when she finally went to her first ultrasound. “At first, we were told one, then two, then three,” says Schrader. “My husband took it much better than I did. He was so calm and I panicked!”
The couple began preparing for the births right away. Although
she lost one baby early in the pregnancy, Schrader was immediately
referred to St. Anthony’s Perinatal Center. She was
monitored throughout her remaining pregnancy with regular
ultrasounds and biophysical profiles. “During the biophysical
profile, I pushed a button every time I felt a baby move
or kick so they could check for fetal movements,” she
says.
Obstetricians co-manage multiple births with maternal-fetal specialists at St. Anthony’s Perinatal Center. This provides appropriate testing throughout a high-risk pregnancy and allows us to continue to care for our patients.
Schrader was finally placed on bed rest for six weeks. The Schraders welcomed twin boys on Valentine’s Day 2006. Now healthy and active 1-year-olds, Nicholas and Lucas keep their parents smiling and busy.
“Life is somewhat hectic, but it’s a lot easier than I first thought it would be with more than one child,” says Schrader. “When they were born, they were the best Valentine’s gift ever!”
